In addition to information, these digital memorials encourage active community participation. Visitors can light virtual memorial candles, upload personal photographs, share fond memories on the tribute wall, and directly order custom floral arrangements to be delivered to the service. Services Offered: Comparing Traditional Burial and Cremation
Avink McCowen Secord Funeral Home and Cremation Society recognizes that every family possesses unique cultural, religious, and financial preferences. To accommodate these diverse needs, they offer a wide spectrum of options ranging from traditional, full-service burials to highly personalized, eco-friendly cremations. Their professional staff is trained to walk families through each choice, explaining the nuances without pressure or upselling.
Traditional burial services typically involve a formal visitation or viewing, a structured funeral service at a chapel or church, and a formal processional to the cemetery for a graveside service. This option provides a physical, permanent resting place that many families find comforting for long-term visitation and remembrance. It allows for classic custom caskets, elaborate floral tributes, and a structured, time-tested approach to mourning.
On the other hand, cremation has grown significantly in popularity due to its flexibility, environmental considerations, and cost-effectiveness. Families can choose direct cremation without a formal service, or pair cremation with a full visitation and memorial service either before or after the cremation process takes place. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How can I search for an older obituary on the Avink McCowen Secord website?
To find older obituaries, navigate to the "Obituaries" section of the website and utilize the built-in search bar. You can input the decedent's first or last name, and use the filter tools to narrow down the search by year or chapel location. If the obituary is from several decades ago, you may also reach out directly to their administrative office for archival assistance.
What are the main physical locations of their chapels?
Avink McCowen Secord operates fully equipped chapels across Southwest Michigan. Their primary locations are situated in Portage, Schoolcraft, Vicksburg, and Plainwell. Each facility is designed to accommodate different service sizes, ranging from intimate family viewings to large community memorial gatherings.
Can we host a celebration of life at a location other than the funeral home?
Yes, absolutely. The staff is highly experienced in coordinating off-site celebrations of life. They can assist in planning and executing services at local parks, country clubs, community centers, private residences, or churches throughout Kalamazoo and Allegan counties.
How does the pre-funding of funeral services work?
When you pre-fund a service, your payments are placed into a secure, state-regulated trust or a specialized pre-need insurance policy. This ensures the funds are legally protected and guaranteed to be available when needed. Furthermore, pre-funding typically guarantees that the cost of the selected funeral home services and merchandise will not increase, protecting you from inflation.
What immediate steps should I take when a death occurs at home?
If the death is unexpected, call 911 immediately to notify local emergency services. If the passing was expected and the individual was under hospice care, contact the hospice nurse first. Once emergency personnel or hospice has made the official declaration of death, call Avink McCowen Secord Funeral Home at their 24/7 helpline to initiate the respectful transfer of your loved one into their care....
